The Story behind CoastXP
CoastXP is an adventure tourism experience like no other. Founder and Ocean Enthusiast Dominic May and his team operate innovative coastal tours on board a custom-built adventure boat in both Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, NSW. Tours include coastal sightseeing, whale watching and guided bushwalking. CoastXP is a multi-award-winning accredited quality and sustainable tourism business and licensed National Parks and Wildlife Service Eco Pass operators.
Who are the people behind your business
Dominic May is the Founder and Ocean Enthusiast behind CoastXP. He grew up on the mid-north coast of NSW and settled in Newcastle after moving to the region to study at University. Dom, as he is better known, loves everything to do with the ocean and tourism, from the marine life which inhabits the coastline to the locals and visitors who share in his experiences.
Tell us something quirky or memorable about you, your customers or your business
Dom and his team are incredibly proud of their achievements since starting CoastXP. In 2023, Dom was recognised for his contribution to the visitor economy by way of the Newcastle City Council Young Citizen of the Year award. This comes after years of hard work in the local tourism industry.

We already knew that Australia's east coast was spectacular, but to see it here from the water is superb, and CoastXP is the way to do it. Dominic and Troy were our crew today, they were fantastic! What is a thing you love about your business?
At CoastXP we’re lucky to share experiences with people for the very first time. Working on the water, we often get to take guests outside their comfort zone and show them things that aren’t possible from land. For example, during the humpback whale migration, we often have guests on board who have never seen a whale up close before, it’s a magical experience.
What is the company background?
CoastXP as a concept began when Dom was still at University, studying a Bachelor of Business majoring in tourism and management, and a Bachelor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Together, with his skills on the water in tourism as a scuba diving instructor and commercial skipper, Dom set about creating CoastXP from scratch, offering an experience in Newcastle that had never been seen before.
What is your ultimate vision for your business?
At CoastXP, we hope to make a lasting impression on Newcastle and Lake Macquarie as a desirable destination to visit, live and explore. We hope to showcase the very best our region has on offer, in order to grow our destination as a sustainable tourism economy.
