The Story behind TWØBAYS Brewing Co

TWØBAYS founder Richard Jeffares loved everything about the craft beer experience until he was diagnosed with Coeliac Disease in 2015. On a strict gluten free diet, he could no longer find the quality and variety of Australian craft beer he had fallen in love with. He feared he would never experience a tasting paddle with friends and family again. Now, he has opened the first dedicated gluten free Brewery and Taproom in Australia. The Taproom is a safe haven for those who either choose to live gluten free or suffer from gluten intolerances. Since opening in December 2018, we have offered people from across the nation an opportunity to explore gluten free craft beer with 20 different beers on our nine Taproom beer taps, with a range of wood-fired gluten free pizza to boot!

Who are the people behind your business

CEO and Founder Richard had the inspiration for the dedicated gluten free brewery and taproom and he has built a team around him with values that align around responsibly sourced and crafted produce. Our head brewer Andrew Gow has 20 years’ experience in the brewing game and his approach of trusting senses complements the skill sets of our assistant head brewer Ajay Hill, who is a biochemist.

Tell us something quirky or memorable about you, your customers or your business

TWØBAYS is adventurous, dedicated and bold in our pursuit for excellence and it is a special moment when a gluten free customer can walk into the Taproom without having to worry if there is anything that they can safely enjoy. It is not necessary for them to ask questions about what can and can’t be consumed; to worry about cross-contamination; to pay more for a ‘gluten free option’; or to have to bring produce from home. We believe that no-one should have to suffer these potentially embarrassing and ostracising experiences. And the look on the face of customer’s face at this revelation makes every ounce of blood, sweat and tears invested in opening the business worth it; a thousand times over. We aim to have something interesting for everyone, whether a customer avoids gluten or not.

What can I say a craft brewery that is aiming to please everyone and succeeding! Such a great place and completely gluten free, from the beer and throughout the kitchen, what a refreshing change. Love the beers, especially as my wife’s gluten free, the IPA is such a standout, paired with one of their fabulous pizzas you can’t go wrong! Finally the bar staff make the place with great knowledge and passion for their craft, keep up the good work will be coming back for more.

What is a thing you love about your business?

TWØBAYS is enabling people with gluten intolerances to once again enjoy the craft beer experience. They can choose a vanilla and liquorice Porter or a lime and coriander Gose, if that’s what they feel like, without risk of contamination. They can enjoy a drink over dinner with friends and family, without feeling left out or worried. The business has contributed to the local community and its thriving tourism economy, and it’s added an alternative brewery option in a region full of fantastic wineries, breweries, cideries and distilleries. But our favourite thing is not just about our local impact. We are getting great beer into the hands of people who care about what they put in their body – by necessity or choice – right across Australia. And they are loving it!

What is the company background?

On a road trip through America, Richard discovered breweries producing gluten free beer that was just as good – if not better – than the beer he remembered. His love of quality beer was rejuvenated. Innovators such as Ground Breaker, Ghostfish and Holidaily were creating a new experience and he wanted to bring that home. Research demonstrated that Australian gluten free beer brands were selling packaged product to a sizeable market across the country, and American dedicated gluten free breweries were proving that a Taproom was a lucrative asset. Now he has created a similar experience, inspired by all the best traits of the Australian craft beer scene and American gluten free craft beer scene.

What is your ultimate vision for your business?

We put great beer back on the menu for everyone. We enable people to be able to enjoy a beer with friends and family, regardless of gluten intolerances or lifestyle choices. We support a society where people are conscious about what they consume and the sustainable story behind it. It’s why we import our grains from the North America – the only place on the planet that malts the best gluten free grains. We create a community hub for like-minded people, whose values around ‘real produce’ align.
