The Story behind Sydney Guided Tours

As a young man, Matt Urmenyhazi’s passion for exploring beautiful Australia took him on a 14-month journey around its vast land. The experiences he had and memories he made stayed with him throughout his adult life. Alas, memories and dreams can only take one so far, and so, to pay the bills, Matt slaved away in video production for 30 years. His love for Australia’s nature and wildlife, however, could not be suppressed forever. Thus, Sydney Guided Tours was born. The Wilderness, Wildlife, Waves, Waterfalls and Wine tour is the ultimate nature and wildlife experience, away from the heavily-worn tourist trails. Visit breathtaking beaches, befriend Aussie animals, savour gourmet produce, bathe under a waterfall … this tour is a feast for the senses. All you need is one day… and Matt.

Who are the people behind your business

Sydney Guided Tours is run by a dedicated husband and wife team. Matt runs the tours, while Winnie makes sure Matt doesn’t forget anything.

Tell us something quirky or memorable about you, your customers or your business

In the early 80’s, one week after finishing school, I hitchhiked solo around Australia for 14 months. I ended up on the receiving end of generosity from other Australians and built lifelong friendships with other Aussies and travellers from abroad. This period of my life was both humbling and transformative. I was exposed to different opportunities, the wonders of travelling, and meeting people from different cultures. Now, I’ve changed seats. I’m no longer the lone, grateful, hitchhiking passenger but a private driver/guide, with the opportunity to share the wonders of Australia’s natural environment with others. As a tour guide I can “pay back” the same friendship and generosity I received all those years ago from fellow travellers and guides.

Beyond happy making memories and seeing beautiful sights! Matt customized every aspect of our day and made everything seamless and spectacular! We couldn’t have been happier and saw amazing sights! Avoca beach took our breath away! The koala experience was hilarious! Matt knew walks and lookouts in the bush that felt super private and local! And how perfect was the wine with oysters and waterfall while sunset chasing??? …. all was magical!! and we will always have this memory as a family. Best tour ever! Emily H, California, USA

What is a thing you love about your business?

At the end of each tour, I take a few moments, sitting in the car to reflect on the day’s events with a big smile. Guests often comment that they felt like they had just spent a great day with a distant relative. And to be honest, I feel like that, too.

What is the company background?

After a lengthy career as a video producer, making documentaries, it was time for a career change. I had no idea what I wanted to do next. Since childhood I’ve always enjoyed exploring and sharing my discoveries of Sydney’s wilderness. In my adult years I shared my passion for nature as a scout leader. Later, I would spend my weekends exploring, finding Aboriginal sites and having them registered. Many members of my extended family, from my wife’s side, live overseas. When they visit, I’m often showing them another side of Sydney, and the beautiful places I’ve discovered. Realizing that this is what I always do in my spare time, becoming a tour guide felt like the most natural decision.

What is your ultimate vision for your business?

My vision is simple: “To leave each guest with memories of their day exploring Sydney’s nature, that will be cherished for the rest of their life.”
