The Village Markets (TVM) is not just a market, it is a collaborative, creative community of small businesses, designers, artists, creatives, foodies, culture seekers and lovers of good vibes. TVM is a boutique event offering tourists and locals a true Gold Coast experience with the opportunity to shop local wares by talented creative small businesses, connect with local business owners, listen to live music and soak in the sunshine in a unique, outdoor environment.
Who are the people behind The Village Markets?
Founded and managed by Marissa Bowden and Sarah Schoeller.
Tell us something quirky or memorable about you, your team, your customer or your business
The Village Markets has recently celebrated ten years in business and over the years has helped over 2,000 small businesses to launch their brand including peony swimwear, KIVARI and Duke of London, as well as musician Ziggy Alberts. The event has been visited by the likes of influencer Nicole Warne of Garry Pepper Girl and surfer Kelly Slater.
What’s the favourite thing you love about your business?
The amazing community feel – some of our stall holders have been a part of the markets since 2008. Our community often collaborates and we’ve formed lasting friendships over the last 10 years.
What’s the company background?
Developed by Marissa Bowden and Sarah Schoeller after being made redundant from their Marketing positions, the duo identified a gap in the Gold Coast market for a family friendly, community event that celebrated creative small business. At just 26 years old and newly unemployed (albeit briefly) the women devised a business plan, approached the council and Burleigh Heads State School and launched in October 2008 with just nine stalls.
Both Marissa and Sarah went on to gain full time employment, but it was clear they were onto a good thing with The Village Markets.
What’s your ultimate vision for The Village Markets?
That the Gold Coast is recognised as a thriving cultural and entrepreneurial city with a long list of success stories.
A testimonial about The Village Markets?
“We have recently secured Net-A-Porter for our October collection and it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of The Village Markets,” says Peony founder, Becky Morton, who sold her first ever bikini from her stall at TVM.
