The Joshuas’ Whitsunday Wedding Campaign was the Whitsunday wedding industry’s way of celebrating marriage equality in Australia.
It was also about positioning the Whitsundays as the wedding heart of Australia, where destination weddings are open to all.
It was not only inclusive in its overt message but also in the number of businesses and individuals who collaborated to make it happen.
A total of 17 Whitsunday wedding suppliers gave their products and services to the campaign free of charge.

Tell us something quirky or memorable about you, your team, your customer or your business
The winners of the $50,000 wedding giveaway were a Newcastle couple Joshua Breakwell and Joshua Starr.
Their marriage proposal, spanning three months, a couple of countries and a treasure hunt of clues, was a story that touched the judges’ hearts.
Easy to work with (even while we were thrusting television cameras into the mix!), handling the media attention (allowing us to have wedding journalists at their nuptials) and most of all deeply in love, they made a lasting impression on everyone involved and became ambassadors for the Whitsundays and its wedding industry.
What’s the favourite thing you love about your business?
When the campaign started it was about giving something back to the Whitsundays, its wedding industry and Australia.
By the time it came to the big day it was about giving something special to the Joshuas.
As with any wedding the Whitsunday industry creates, this was over and above anything else, all about love.
What’s the company background?
The Joshuas’ Whitsunday Wedding Campaign was conceived because of Australia’s ‘yes’ vote to marriage equality.
Julie Telford from Paradise Cove Whitsundays felt strongly about giving away a wedding as a way to celebrate.
Jess Lawrence from the Wedding Planners Whitsundays was the glue that bound the contributors together and Jo Sweeney, Sharon Smallwood, Deb Savy (Tropix Photography) and Phill Gordon (Riptide Creative) were the creative and media team who took the magic to the public.
What’s your ultimate vision for The Joshuas’ Whitsunday Wedding Campaign?
We hope that in 20 years time people look back on the Joshuas’ wedding campaign as the way the Whitsundays and Australia embraced same sex marriage and marriage equality.
A testimonial about The Joshuas’ Whitsunday Wedding Campaign?
“Words cannot describe the gratitude we have for this stellar line-up of wedding professionals. These people worked around the clock to bring our dream day to life and at the same time also make sure the buzz surrounding this extremely generous giveaway was recognised nationally." – Joshua Breakwell
