Each year O’Reilly’s commemorate the Stinson rescue by retracing Bernard O’Reilly’s famous journey through mountainous rainforest terrain as he searched for the survivors of the Stinson plane crash. The Stinson airliner VHUHH en route from Brisbane to Sydney crashed into the Lamington Ranges in February 1937, killing 4 of the 7 on board, and sparking a search that failed to turn up any wreckage. Ten days after the crash, Bernard O’Reilly set out on foot to find the Stinson wreckage. Through his superior bush skills and determination he found the crash site and to his surprise, 2 survivors.
What’s the favourite thing you love about your business?
There is an extraordinary longevity and richness of relationships with family, staff and community members who feel a part of the O’Reilly’s story, history and family. It has been quite a privilege to see business planning and long-term strategy from previous generations come to fruition – including our campground (and research centre) equipped with powered and non-powered sites, and set to open in 2019. Canungra Valley Vineyard 15-acre property and ‘Kiloween’ homestead is pretty special too
What’s the company background?
The O’Reilly family pioneered ecotourism in Australia when they began hosting visitors in Lamington National Park in 1915 and later charged for the service in 1926. In those days, the former O’Reilly’s “Guest House” and slab huts took nature lovers two days via car, train and horseback to reach. Today, with this history ingrained, it is little wonder the third generation O’Reillys are passionate advocates for the history, heritage and education of the surrounding Lamington National Park and educating guests on the significance of the World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforest.
What’s your ultimate vision for O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat?
O’Reilly’s company mission is ‘to make every guest feel special’. Our long term vision is to educate our guests about caring for the local environment which is genuinely embedded in our culture.
