Big Mama Sailing is a unique and exclusive sailing experience for small groups of 12 guests maximum on a 60ft(18m) yacht. We welcome our guests into our home & being owner/operators we can ensure we offer a consistent & genuine experience, sharing the hidden gems of Magnetic Island. We base ourselves on Magnetic Island, but we are happy to pick and drop off from Townsville for groups of 6 and more, and private charters. We focus not only on the tourism market, but look after our locals too.

Tell us something quirky or memorable about you, your team, your customer or your business
Life is about having a good laugh! A regular funny experience that happens, when our tender approaches Big Mama full of guests, they are already having a giggle.Big Mama is a beautiful, well maintained 18m sailing vessel, but for some strange reason they associate or connect the name ‘Big Mama’ to Lisa(me), expecting me to be more voluptuous. To change a boat’s name can bring bad luck, and the fact that Big Mama is a well known North QLD built vessel, she would lose her QLD identity. We love that her name gives everyone a laugh, and we are happy & genuine people so we join in the laugher too.
What’s the favourite thing you love about your business?
We wake up every morning excited about meeting new friends from all over the world and welcoming them into our home and family. We love spoiling them with freshly made scones on their welcome and taking them on an adventure as we do not have a planned itinerary.Snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef is a highlight. We get butterflies in our stomach seeing the smiles and joy on their faces, especially our guests that can not swim, nervous and beginners. We ensure everyone enjoys and is safe snorkelling.
What’s the company background?
Stu and I have been together for 23 years and met on a local Townsville Cruise Vessel called Coral Princess. We both have worked in the marine industry for many years, and after working our last tourism season in Darwin 2011 for another company skippering boats we sailed back to Cairns. While antifouling our last sailing vessel at a Cairns Yacht Slipway, Big Mama arrived at the slip. We had known the vessel for many years as she worked in Queensland waters. We knew she was perfect for what we wanted to achieve.A ‘FOR SALE’ sign was placed on her & this was the beginning of our dream come true.
What’s your ultimate vision for Big Mama Sailing?
We will look back with pride. We had a dream and worked hard to ensure it came true.We blended our lifestyle and passion into a business to make a living doing what we love to do.
