1. Panel session on Google My Business

On October 8th, 2018 we welcomed Jean Magalhães, Marketing Manager for Google My Business, Australia and New Zealand. Whilst we couldn’t record the session for privacy reasons, we’ve taken plenty of notes.

One third of all searches on Google are now local searches so it’s crucial to invest in your local search strategy.

    • can I hide my address, how do I verify a listing as the postcards never reach me, what address should I list if I’m operating tours that aren’t in my own address?
    • I run a tour business which leaves from location A, B, C (as I pick people up from their hotel/backpacker/etc).
    • What address should I list as the tour location isn’t my own address (e.g. my address in in Darwin but I do tours in Kakadu). I can’t list the hotel’s address (or the visitor information centre as I have tried already to send the verification postcard there but they never receive it), Our Boat Tours depart from a Public Jetty. We have no shopfront. We go to the jetty by boat  and collect our passengers from there.  This jetty cannot be found on google maps.  I have tried a couple of times to have the verification letter posted to the Visitor Information Centre on the Jetty.  It never arrives. I have been able to verify our home address (postal address for the business) and that is what is listed on google. I want the address of the Jetty to be listed as our business address.  How can I get this sorted with google.
    • How do I register when I our business is on an island and we can’t use PMB or PO Boxes.
      Previous business shows up that was a part of the current business but no longer. i:e We have gone from 3 fishing lodge to 2 but the lodge that is no longer part of the business comes up.
  • Seasonality issues:
    • My business operates during the dry season only – I am closed during the wet season. What should I do with my business listing? (this person was told that there was no real solution from Google and she still has people coming to her business gate when they’re closed.
  • Support issues:
    • How can I contact someone at Google My Business to get support? (there are now so many ways!)
  • Other issues: 
    • Can you explain how Google My Business is connected/not connected to my Google+ Page?
  • Promotion questions:
    • What is the number one thing I need to do on my website to help with my Google My Business ranking?
  • Online travel agents (OTAs) and Google My Business
    • I have a listing to my hotel, and there are links to OTAs under my business info. What is that?
    • How do I get rid of them?
    • How do I make my own booking system listed there alongside the OTAs?

3. Q&A session on Google My Business and Local Search for Tourism and Hospitality businesses

Some of the questions that were asked and answered during the Q&A were:

  • I would be interested in how Google selects businesses  or listings which appear in the initial search for a town
  • We have a photo that a guest has posted, that isn’t at our property – can I delete this?  I have already flagged it but it is still there
  • Can we copy and use photos else where
  • Can we re-order photos ?
  • Google have old location images from 2006 which are are just not relevant anymore to the brand. I have reported them 5 times and they still haven’t been removed? Any ideas?
  • How can you call them?  It is always so hard to find a number
  • How do I find the Google My Business support phone number?
  • Can you call google for false business addresses by your competitors?
  • What are the steps to change your business listing email address?
  • When i ask a Q&A do I need to be signed in?  Does the question and the answer then appear both from me?
  • How to remove photos from my listing
  • Can you tell me why some of my Google my Business profiles don’t have the ability to post on them?
  • Is there any way we can delete photographs put up on our Google business page by guests/customers? Some are detrimental to the marketing of our business, or were taken some many years ago. I’ve tried everything I know but cannot remove them in Google My Business.
  • What do you do if someone has set up a incorrect google listing for you business?  How do you remove it? I think the local chamber of commerce has put one up for us listing their address.
